Comms Connect 2023

Comms Connect 2023

Comms Connect is the annual conference and exhibition for all those involved in critical communications and public safety. This year’s event was held at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, 13-14 June 2023.

The conference programme featured industry experts presenting on a wide range of topics, new technologies and case studies. There were over 40 exhibitors represented from New Zealand Australia and Asia. The event is not just an avenue to disseminate knowledge but a rare opportunity for like minded professionals to gather in one venue over a few days to mingle, share ideas and create new partnerships and opportunity.

4 notable trends in the radio critical comms sector:

1. Move to Digital: The shift from analogue to digital communication is a key trend that is gaining momentum. Digital radio systems offer better audio quality, increased capacity, improved spectrum efficiency, and enhanced security. Digital standards such as DMR (Digital Mobile Radio), P25 (Project 25), and NXDN (Next Generation Digital Narrowband) have gained popularity across a range of industries and government organisations.

2. Satellite Communications: Satellite-based radio communication continues to evolve, catering to various applications such as maritime, aviation, remote areas, and disaster response. Starlink, which became highly sought after post Cyclone Gabrielle, is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, video calls and telecommunications. Time will tell whether this is a reliable and cost effective means of communication for those in rural or remote areas.

3. Internet of Things (IoT) Connectivity: The growing demand for IoT devices and applications has influenced radio communication. Low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies provide long-range connectivity with low power consumption, enabling IoT devices to communicate over radio waves. These technologies are being deployed for applications such as smart cities, industrial automation, asset tracking and more.

4. Enhanced Security: With the increasing threat of cyber attacks and unauthorized access, radio communication systems are adopting robust security measures. Encryption techniques and authentication protocols are being implemented to safeguard data and prevent unauthorized interception or tampering.

Ultimately, Comms Connect is an opportunity for industry professionals to focus on emerging technologies, highlight best practice and identify potential for applications with our own customers.
