Alcom supplies radio products and services to a diverse range of customers in forestry, farming, and other industries across the rugged Central North Island. These customers depend on reliable radio communications to maintain safe and efficient operations.
In general terms, VHF radio is recommended for use in rural areas, whereas UHF is more suitable for urban or built-up areas. Simplex (line of sight) or Duplex (via repeater) are the transmission options. Before making any system/equipment recommendations, we assess the following aspects and do some on-site testing:
- Understand the customer’s brief. We take time to review the operations and the number of personnel who will need comms.
- What is the nature and size of the area requiring communications?
- Is the land mostly flat, or does it feature rolling hills and valleys? If the terrain is relatively flat with a 10-20km range required, simplex radios that rely on line-of-sight may be the simplest and most cost-effective solution.
- If the land is rugged, extensive (requiring 20km+ range), then installing single or multiple repeaters may be necessary. These repeaters can be powered by either mains electricity or by solar-powered batteries, depending on accessibility.
- What is the available budget?
- Although installing repeaters requires a higher initial investment, the long-term benefits make them well worth considering if simplex communication does not provide sufficient performance.
- As an authorised supplier of all the major brands, Alcom offers customers a range of pricing options and is committed to providing the most cost-effective solution for your needs.
CASE STUDY:
In 2015, Alcom installed a solar-powered digital repeater system on a rugged 1,800-hectare farm in the King Country. The installation increased radio coverage across the property from 60% (previously achieved using simplex) to 95%.
During a recent routine maintenance inspection, our technicians confirmed that the system continues to perform reliably. The only recommendation was to plan for battery replacement within the next 12–24 months. Given its current performance, we expect the repeater to continue operating reliably for many years to come.
The farmer is very pleased with the system’s performance and its positive impact on safety and productivity over the past decade.
